26th of April 1986, as a result of tests of emergency systems and design errors of reactors located at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, there were two explosions in reactor number four in the Chernobyl facility in Ukraine. After the second one, the shell supposed to prevent the surroundings from radiation was so damaged that almost 30 tons of highly radioactive uranium and graphite seeped out, and aided by the wind, contaminated the surrounding area.
But this was only just the beginning. After experiencing almost thirty fires related to the reactor, overhead of the facility there appears a highly radioactive cloud which turns out was the most dangerous thing in connection to the tragedy. Almost all of the fire brigade first responders who prevented the fire from spreading to other reactors died due to irradiation the very next day. Bodies of those brave men were so contaminated that their funeral was closed, not only for the public but even the closest family.
For the next three days, a desperate clean-up crew used helicopters to drop special substances on the still burning main reactor to prevent fire and contamination from spreading further.
It soon turned out that on one of the reactors was a bomb intended to stop failures in the event of a minor threat, which should be disarmed as soon as possible because of the current situation. Had the bomb exploded, the molten core would have penetrated into large and overfilled tanks of radioactive water after which the high energy level would have resulted in a huge explosion that turned half of Ukraine into a wasteland. As it was, the other existing damage done to the facility created a huge nuclear cloud that brought a very high risk of radioactive contamination throughout all of Europe.
